Moreover the thrill of novelty knowing that Yamazaki-san rarely plays a character that is very delicate and warm and Hirose-san playing a headstrong and persistent individual makes the movie something to look forward to.

These two actors are slowly but surely climbing the film and drama industry of Japan that both are worthy to receive such a project. Particularly the two leads, Kento Yamazaki and Suzu Hirose, in terms of popularity, both are good choices to play Kousei and Kaori. The moment where Kaori-san takes the stage in the movie is also the moment the audience in the cinema gives their undivided attention. The fact that a cinema’s aesthetic structure is the same as that of a music hall, makes the scenes more realistic. On the other hand, the music hall which was one of the major filming locations never failed in giving off the feeling of tension and esteems which complemented the scenes where Kousei-san could not hear his playing once again and the ground breaking performance of Kaori-san. As the film progressed, more beautiful and uplifting scenery were captured that put us all at ease, allowing only our emotions to flow with the movie. The blooming cherry blossom, which signified the month of April, along with the soothing voice over of Hirose-san gave the audience a fresh feel upon the start of the movie. Though I could not find any source as to where the live adaptation was filmed, the location and the scenery played an important role in evoking the warmth and the nostalgic sense of the movie. However, both of us came into agreement that it does not mean that the movie was a failure compared to the animation. The same went for my friend, as she had also watched the animated version.

Though the actors and actresses did a superb job in embodying the characters as well as learning to play the instruments, I was not able to shed a single tear as I’ve had in the anime. Because I’ve watched the anime, watching the movie was merely just replaying the notable and poignant scenes with real people and natural scenery. However, I cannot guarantee that the same feelings will be evoked by the movie based on my personal experience. Though it may sound as a mere exaggeration, such is truly the case as also attested by my colleagues. I can still recount how many times I’ve locked myself in the bathroom, crying. I remember how the dramatic scenes broke my heart that I’ve suffered post-anime depression. When I first watched the anime version of the movie, I could never forget how many times my feelings were toppled again and again in its rollercoaster of emotions. Although little did Kousei know that there’s more behind the liberating and lively Kaori-san, which will change both their lives and feelings forever. From the silent and pessimistic Kousei Arima, Kaori-san manages to release him from those factors that pull him back and gets him to play the piano enjoyably again. However, when he met schoolmate, Kaori Miyazono played by Suzu Hirose (Our Little Sister, Gakkuo no Kaidan) and her breathtaking performance with the violin, Kousei finds new hope and freedom in music that he seeks to achieve. Moreover, Arima-san’s unresolved feelings and memories of his late mother, also a pianist and his mentor, prevents him from playing freely and gleefully. Arima-san played by Kento Yamazaki (Wolf Girl & Black Prince, A Girl and 3 Sweethearts) refuses to play the piano, despite his incredible talent, because of his inability to continue hearing his music whenever he plays. (c) Anime News Networkīased on the Japanese animation, “Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso,” the movie narrates the life-changing experience of piano prodigy Kousei Arima. But this film adaptation was of course an exception because of the growing population of anime and Japanese pop culture enthusiasts in the country.

It’s a rare occasion for Japanese movies to be shown locally (subbed and not dubbed) and usually Asian movies do not last long in the local box offices due to its unpopularity. When Your Lie in April was released in our nearby theaters, my friend and I did not have second thoughts and immediately reserved movie tickets.
